Each year Round Rock ISD has open registration to refer a student for gifted services screening. Our service model provides an array of learning opportunities for students who show advanced ability or potential in comparison to students of the same age, experience, and environment.
The following is the Round Rock ISD Identification Timeline:
September – TAG Specialists will provide planned experiences in all Kindergarten classrooms. These activities are designed to elicit responses that might show characteristics of gifted students.
October – Between October 1st – October 31st, each elementary campus will hold in person parent meetings to present information regarding identification, placement, and services for gifted students. Look for more information in campus news and/or on campus websites to attend this in person event. These slides include the material being covered on that evening and are posted on the district website for secondary parents and those who cannot attend their campus event..

Also in the month of October, campuses will be administering a cognitive abilities assessment to all 2nd grade students. This assessment is used not only to guide classroom instruction, but also for potential need for special services such as gifted. The results of these assessments are shared with parents directly from the campus.
November/December – November 11th – December 13th is the registration window to refer a current student to be assessed for gifted services. The registration link will open at 8:00 a.m. on November 11 and will close at 4:30 p.m. on December 13th. Anyone wishing to refer a student for screening will find the registration link on the Round Rock ISD TAG website. After completing the online form, the submitter will receive an email confirmation of your referral for gifted services and will need to keep a copy of the confirmation email for their records.
January/February – Assessments are given to all students who were referred for gifted services. The campus will work to schedule time for the testing to take place and notify families.
March 1st – Notification of placement decisions will be communicated to Round Rock ISD families. The goal is to send home notifications by March 1st, but unforeseen complications are always a possibility. Campuses work to complete the testing with as little disruption to the classroom schedule as possible. Kindergarten services begin for identified students.
April – Additional assessments will be given as needed. The elementary TAG specialist or secondary TAG counselor will be in contact with if there will be more testing after the initial battery.
May – 5th grade students who are newly identified for gifted services in MATH, will be given the opportunity to take the Exam for Acceleration over the 6th grade TEKS in order to participate in Accelerated Math 2 in 6th grade.
The elementary TAG specialist or secondary TAG counselor can also help guide anyone interested through this process. Do not hesitate to reach out to them if you are in need of support. With the exception of kindergarten, services for students identified this year will begin in August of the next school year.
** NOTE: Only students who are CURRENTLY ENROLLED in Round Rock ISD are able to register for the TAG Testing process. If you are planning on a move to the District, but your child is not enrolled yet, please contact the campus elementary TAG Specialist or secondary TAG counselor so they can advise you of your options.
