When I was in high school in the late 80’s, selecting courses was easy. My choices fit on one page. Today’s high school experience is completely different and choices are plenty and now in a course catalog similar to college.
Throughout the year, we will feature one of the array of opportunities that meet the needs of our gifted and advanced learners.
- Starting with an overview of college and credit in high school, there are four primary programs.
- Advanced Placement (AP)
- University of Texas OnRamps
- International Baccalaureate
- Austin Community College Dual Credit
Each of these programs has pros and cons and meets the needs of learners differently.
Taking college level courses in high school is beneficial for a variety of reasons. First of all, college is expensive, and getting some of the core courses out of the way saves money. Second, even the experience of taking the courses will make the transition to college easier and might help your student decide the direction they want to pursue in college. Lastly, while in college, it might help a student graduate early or allow them to take fewer credit hours per semester reducing stress.
