Over the course of last semester, the fifth graders at Redbud Elementary School explored Ancient Civilizations. In order to challenge students to make connections and go beyond the surface level of understanding, we used the Depth and Complexity Icons (JTaylor).
Encouraging students through confusion and uncertainty

Going Beyond Book Clubs
I cannot understate the importance of helping students realize that reading is enjoyable and fun. If there is one lesson I want my students to walk away with from my class, it is that reading opens your mind and heart, is truly enjoyable, and will expand your outlook on life. I have a HUGE classroom library, and my students have access to checking out the books.
AP Seminar – Finishing Up the AP Portfolio
With Advanced Placement (AP)® exams right around the corner, AP Seminar students at McNeil High School are working hard to put the finishing touches on their AP Portfolios and prepare for the AP Exam. This week, we are working on final submissions of Individual Written Arguments and Individual Multimedia Presentations.
Everyone Can Be a Mathematician – or anything they want to be!
This year Sommer Elementary received a $2146 NEA Envision Equity grant to purchase classroom books about global mathematicians from throughout time and in particular those about women and people of color. I want my students from families with origins around the world to see their cultures’ heroes and know the worldwide impact of their contributions.
